Hong Kong Rowing Team Triumphs at 2023 Australian Rowing Championships with Three Gold Medals

Hong Kong rowing team competed in the 2023 Australian Rowing Championships held at Champion Lakes in Perth, Australia from 27 March to 2 April 2023. Team HK entered a total of 15 men and 11 women who competed in single, double, and quadruple sculls events in both open and youth categories. In addition, Hong Kong sent para-rowers Lau Siu Tsun and Ip Ka Yee to compete in the men’s and women’s 2000m single sculls and mixed double sculls events.

The competition was seen as a prelude to the Asian Para Games later in the year and attracted elite rowers from around the world. Chan Tik Lun and Ho Siu Wing won the men’s lightweight double sculls event with a lead of over six seconds. Para-rower Ip Ka Yee took gold in both PR1 women’s single sculls and PR2 mixed double sculls events partnering with Lau Siu Tsun.

This was the first international competition for the two para-rowers, and their coach, Yau Tsz Fung, was pleased with their performance and hoped that they could continue to improve through international exposure.

Need your generous donation to rebuild the rowing sport of HK!

The Sha Tin Rowing Center and the Jockey Club Shek Mun Rowing Center, which were built along the Shing Mun River, are also strongly attacked and affected by the super typhoon “Mangkhut ”, part of the pontoons are severely damaged and the boathouses were flooded. The Hong Kong, China Rowing Association (HKCRA) had issued an urgent notice on the website that all courses and activities, including the training of the Hong Kong team and youth team, are cancelled. The pontoons at both Rowing Centres and other facilities are severely damaged, in case the pontoon could not be repaired, the estimated renovation and repair costs for both centers are around HK$6 million. Since both centres are highly used by the Hong Kong team, university teams, clubs, schools and the public, the usage rate is around 400 people per day; closure of both centres will be seriously affected the regular training.
