2018 Asian Rowing Coastal Championships (Day 1)
Immediate Release
2018 Asian Rowing Coastal Championships (Day 1)
Saturday saw 77 rowing crews from 8 countries and regions in Asia contest the first rounds of the 2018 Asian Rowing Coastal Championships in Hong Kong Harbour.
Racing started and finished off Kellett Island in Causeway Bay, but the 4 km course required crews to race around a series of buoys which took them close to Central Pier 10, the Hong Kong Observation Wheel and Tamar Park waterfront, before finally rounding Golden Bauhinia Square to race to the finish line.
Coastal rowing boats are designed to be rowed in rough waters, but the wave and wind conditions in the harbour challenged even the most experienced rowers, to produce exciting races and some surprising results.
Top crews from Saturday’s preliminary rounds will move to the Championship finals on Sunday. Results from today point to particularly strong performances from Thailand, but they are likely to be challenged in several events by Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and also The Philippines.
The best vantage points to watch the racing are around the Central Harbourfront between Central Pier 10 and Tamar Park or at Golden Bauhinia Square. Racing will take place on Sunday between 10:00 to 11:30 and 2:00p.m. to 4:30.
