Hong Kong Rowing Team Captured Brilliant Results in the 2017 Sydney International Rowing Regatta!
The Hong Kong Rowing Team got their season off to a great start at the Australian Open Championships (Sydney International Rowing Regatta) this week.
The men’s lightweight quad crew, comprising Rio Olympic double – TANG Chiu Mang and CHIU Hin Chin, London Olympian – LEUNG Chun Shek, and newcomer Kenny LIU won the gold medal, with an impressive performance. The Hong Kong U.23 crew also reached the final placing 4th.
Olympian CHIU Hin Chun also made a very strong showing in the men’s lightweight single scull to take the silver medal, beating two members of the newly selected Australian team. Chun’s Olympic partner – TANG Chiu Mang – placed 5th.
Top female sculler LEE Ka Man joined together with a partner from Western Australia to take the bronze medal in women’s lightweight double sculls. A second bronze medal came in the men’s lightweight U.23 double sculls with LAM San Tung and CHAN Yuk Man.
Hong Kong crews narrowly missed medals in the lightweight men’s double and U.21 lightweight men’s singles events.
In the final race of the regatta – the men’s open 500m sprint event – the senior men’s quad of CHIU, TANG, LIU and LEUNG again took the gold medal. The U.23 crew of LAM San Tung, CHAN Yuk Man, CHAU Yee Ping and LAM San Tung placed 2nd.
Coach Sam WONG, leading the team in Sydney, was pleased with the overall performance of the team.
“This is our first race of the season and it is still quite early in the year. We have not yet done a lot of speed training, so it is great to see the crews performing well against some top Australian competitors. We are now looking ahead to the World Championships and World U.23 Championships later in the year – and of course we are also starting to prepare our target crews for the 2018 Asian Games too.”
The Hong Kong, China Rowing Association congratulates again to the successful achievements of our rowers and the coaching team!
