SHA commends Hong Kong Rowing Athletes for the Development of Sports and Recreation Activities
The Secretary of Home Affairs (SHA), Mr Caspar TSUI, JP, presented commendation certificates and awards pins to the Hong Kong Rowing Athletes on 16 March 2021, including the Champion of 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships presented by Dah Sing Bank (WRCC) in Coastal Women’s Quadruple Coxed Sculls (CW4x+) crew, WONG Sheung Yee, LEUNG King Wan, LEUNG Wing Wun, HUNG Wing Yan Winne and TSE Yan Man, and the Chairman of the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association, Mr NG Kong Wan, for their outstanding contributions to the development of sports and recreation activities.
The 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships presented by Dah Sing Bank, held on 1-3 November 2019 at Victoria Harbour, was recognised as an “M” Mark event, and that helped to promote Hong Kong’s image as Asia’s sports hub. While Victoria Harbour was the ideal city-centre venue for coastal rowing competitions, which brought rowing into the heart of Hong Kong, its working harbour, both for the unique experience of visiting rowers and also for the Hong Kong public to experience the excitement of rowing at the waterfront.
The championships attracted 500 world class rowers, hailing from 29 countries and regions, to compete for 7 events World Champions. Hong Kong Women’s Rowing Team beat Russia and Denmark to clinch the CW4x+ gold medals. “I am honored to attend the SHA Commendation Scheme Presentation Ceremony and receive the award, it means a lot to me. It’s a good start for rowing promotion, and it could let more people know the sport of rowing. The encouragement and support from everybody are the reasons for my success”, said Winne.
Mr NG Kong Wan, also the vice-chairperson of the 2019 WRCC organizing committee, believed the success of WRCC and the recognition from SHA would lead the future develop of Rowing in Hong Kong, “Rowing emphases perfect alignment between boat, oars, water and motion. Rowing needs team work. I am flattered to receive this award. The award should go to everyone involved in developing Hong Kong Rowing and bringing World Rowing Coastal Championships 2019 to the Victoria Harbour, the first time in Asia! Let’s keep the rowing spirit. I am looking forward to assist Hong Kong Rowing to have a lot more exciting development in the coming years!”
